Rihanna is searching for Britain’s most exciting new fa shion designers!

Rihanna is searching Britain for the next generation of raw, undiscovered designer talent and has hand-picked Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts to head up the challenge for her.

Over eight weeks twelve unknown designers will be challenged by Rihanna and Nicola to create outfits for a string of musicians and celebrities.  The show will celebrate the extraordinary talent and creativity in the British fashion scene. With Rihanna, a fashion icon herself, and Nicola, who created her own Dainty Doll make-up range, at the helm, the show will recognise the increasing influence popstars have on mainstream trends.

The final challenge and ultimate task for the winner will be to design a unique stage outfit for Rihanna’s Wireless performance in Hyde Park in July 2012. The chance to dress one of the world’s most famous women for an event that will attract worldwide coverage is the perfect springboard for the aspiring designer’s future fashion career.

Executive producer, Rihanna said:
“I’ve always had a great love of fashion. It’s a constant source of inspiration in my life, and is a big reason why I’ve grown into the person and artist I am today. I have been very fortunate to work with some truly amazing designers and stylists throughout my career, and they have been instrumental in making sure my creative vision reaches the stage. I am excited to follow the journey of our aspiring contestants and see how their individuality influences their efforts during the course of the show.”

Nicola added: “I’m so excited for us to get started on finding a new up and coming British designer who just needs a chance, a little bit of help in getting their skills noticed. There are talented people, undiscovered because they don’t have the means, or their circumstances are too far away from the fashion world. This show is here to discover those people and give them a shot. I’m looking for someone who can think outside the box, and who isn’t going to give up at the first hurdle”

To  take part visit www.skyliving.com or e-mail applications@twentytwenty.tv

Applications must be received by Sunday 5th February.  Filming takes place over 8 weeks in the UK from April 2012.

Introducing Rehmali...

Originally a personal stylist, Birmingham based Maria Rehmali is a designer who creates classic, feminine pieces which women can feel confident in. Rehmali’s creativity stems from her position as a stylist, as she was able to learn what women wanted from the clothes they wear. This inspiration has led to Rehmali’s collections being classic and accessible, with a glamorous and elegant twist. Femininity is a key concept in her collections.

So, firstly, what made you change paths from being a personal stylist to a fashion designer?

From a very young age, I have always been imaginative and creative. My career started as a stylist in well named fashion houses, surrounded by major fashion names. Being surrounded by such inspiration and craftsmanship, was a teaser for me, I wanted to be a part of this culture!!! I was known for my keen eye in pulling together and creating certain looks for my clients and general public. This led me on to designing and sketching my ideas, which acted as a meditation for me, my escape of real life and into the Rehmali world.
My education background is in finance, I have obtained a degree in Accounting. I didn’t do a fashion degree as I had a head start in the fashion industry. My imagination is a reflection on my work to creating and producing garments that my clients love and always want more!!!

Your designs are classic and feminine, how do you want women to feel wearing your designs?

My women is an everyday lady, there is not a certain class, shape or age that my garments are aimed at, just that you love to wear couture and the love of fashion. My women feel powerful, sophisticated, classy, confident and comfortable with the Rehmali label.

What is your favourite piece that you will be showcasing in the London Fashion Week show?

My designs are realistic to every women’s figure; each garment shines out a certain characteristic. I am passionate about all of my designs and cannot choose which my favourite is as they each have a purpose.

What influences your designs?

My influences come from my inspiration in everyday situations. Travelling across the globe has a great input in my designs, different cultures and ways of life, give me a great comfort in how my designs should balance through the different and varitey of women across the world. From colours to fabrics, global climate has a great in packed on how a women feels, 'she should feel confident every time she leaves and enters a room'. Looking at current established designers and the history of fashion also helps me to learn and push myself to create further iconic garments.

Where do you see the Rehmali brand going in the future?

Rehmali brand will continue to showcase across different continents for the world to see my passion and love for beautiful, craftsmanship in my garments. My ultimate goal is to open various fashion houses across the global and to collaborate with major fashion names to produce unique and 'never seen before' designs'. Rehmali is here to make a statement and stay!!

And, finally, how does it feel seeing your designs on the runway?

Watching my creativity and my passion on the runway is a truly a dream. To be given the opportunity to be recognised for my talent in design, is emotional but exciting for the response I get back from press and buyers. This is my satisfaction and the true motivation of Rehmali.

Introducing Kami Shade...

The fabulous Kami Shade offers women sexy, yet sophisticated, clothes. The designer has signature party dress and swimwear pieces. Kami Shade creates clothes which flatter and compliment women, so it is no surprise that the brand has a strong celebrity following including Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, Rihanna, Sharon Stone, The Pussy Cat Dolls, Danity Kane, Lauren Conrad and Jessica Alba.

Your move from San Francisco to Los Angeles seems like a defining moment in your career as a designer, would you agree?

Definitely. San Francisco was never established as a 'Fashion" City. It's mostly geared towards independent designers and hobbyist which was great for getting your business started but what happens after that? I knew I wanted more than just a hobby. Designing and running my own company has always been my passion and when I hit the highest points in my career in the Bay Area, I knew that I still wanted more. Los Angeles was the closest I could get to New York so I headed to Hollywood!

Which celebrity has been the most exciting to see wear your designs?

I would say out of all the Celebrities who have worn or purchased my pieces including Sharon Stone, Lauren Conrad and Rhianna, I would say a lesser known actress, Julie Andrews. She had a guest spot on Fox's Hit TV Show 'House" and wore one of my gowns in a NY Fashion Week Segment on the show. The show aired across the world it was my 1st time ever appearing on National Television. It was surreal to see something that I created for millions around the world to see.

What is your favorite piece that you are showcasing in Fashion Week and why?

My favorite piece would definitely be my Milano Sequin Dress Collection. The vibrant color, the sparkle and shine of the sequin and the way the fabric and the design on the model will be absolutely breathtaking. But also, look out my Textured Leather Dresses with my signature Galese Cuts. Not to be missed!

Your designs tend to use a lot of sequins, why is this?

Every woman wants to be the center of attention. Simple black is safe, but sequins will definitely turn heads at any event

Can you describe your customer base in three words?

Confident, Powerful, DIVA

What do you see in the future for Kami Shade?

What's Next for Kami Shade'? Expanding My Empire Internationally. The United Kingdom is my second biggest market from the United States. Making these signature pieces available for everyone to touch and feel the power of these garments. I'm deeply connected with my brand so the sky is the limit. My passion is to make my clients feel beautiful and confident whenever they step out in a Kami Shade' garment.

Introducing Obscure Couture...

By now most of you are all aware that aside from our 'A La Mode' Show, this fashion week we also have our 'Emerging Designers Catwalk Presentation' in association with Browns Courtrooms. This week we caught up with the ladies behind fashion label Obscure Couture who will be showcasing at the show on September 19th.

Tell us a bit about your brand?
We are Obscure Couture, we create street/stage wear for the introverted extrovert. All of our limited edition, individually numbered collections are handmade with love in the UK.  Here at Obscure Heights we use only the finest materials we can get our little mitts on, from the most pampered Kobe leathers to the most delicate French lace and back ground to amazing hand knits.  Make your other clothes jealous!

How did you come up with the name?
My partner Lyndsay started Obscure Couture while I was working in Sydney, she originally came up with a name that was a bit naughty then decided to change to Obscure Couture.  I love it! Not so much fun to say when you have had a glass of wine...
What clients do you aim to target?
Our pieces are aimed at the introverted extrovert.  That person who likes to be an individual, stand out, loud, from the crowd.  It's not for wallflowers.  We say, Get Obscure Couture on and feel fearless, desirable and in demand.  A lot of our pieces are very stage orientated and really showcase the person wearing them.

Why the twist of punk in your traditional Victorian designs?
The Victoriana punk was our inspiration for AW11/12.  The two just go so well together, we wanted to harness punks stark harshness and create a brash clash of sex and beauty.  The Victorian silhouette is lots of fun to play with and the complete over indulgence from both influences really gave us a brilliant base from which to show off!!

Where do Obscure Couture’s inspirations come from?
We are inspired by EVERYTHING, it's hard for us to focus and keep in our 'seasonal' bubble as we tend to run off with ideas and have the next three seasons on the back burner.  We do tend to go for things that are generally stereotyped or labelled and try to bring them a fresh breath.  Inspiration from the most unimaginable beauty and the darkest depths, emotion evoking extremes!!

You say that you don’t follow trend books, what trends would you like to set?
We are big advocates for dressing how you feel, really expressing yourself or expressing your values and opinions through style and choice of garment.  It does happen, everyone does it but mainly just 'oh I feel drained today, I think I'll pull this massive black sheet on".  I guess the 'trend' we would like to set is for people to be more expressive and give the option of choice.

What is your bestselling piece?
We have had such a great reception so far, it's been overwhelming.  Can I give you our top three??  Our big pieces have been the mandible skirt (high waisted ombre silk chiffon with gorgeous full length ruffles and tiered train), our Trapezium top (studded kobe leather and hand painted silk trapeze top) and Malleus skirt which is pink lamb nappa with oversized pockets lined with kobe leather and hand stud details.

What factors do you consider when creating your designs?
We initially think of our inspiration, the season, fabrics.  The most exciting part for us is the photo shoot, we like to tell stories through them so we think of our stories, how we imagine people wearing the pieces and the over all message we want to get out.
This season is SS12 and we have made realistic adaptations to the normal Spring/Summer ideas, lets face it, we are not getting the weather to justify ALL these tiny summer outfits!!!

Which celebrity do you think would make a great ambassador for Obscure Couture?
We love Fever Ray, YoLandi Vi$$a, Chloe Sevigny, Georgia May Jagger and Pixie Geldof.  For starters haha! All these girls have immense style and exude confidence.

What have been some of your career highlights to date?
We launched Obscure Couture in October 2010 so we are a relatively new business.  We were nominated for Young Designer of the Year at the Scottish Fashion Awards 2011.  That was huge considering we had created just one collection; we were up against people who have been in the business for years.  It’s brilliant to get the recognition so early.  Then, of course showing our debut collection 'Flesh and Bone' at London fashion week in February 2011.

What should we expect from Obscure designs in the coming future?
Expect the unexpected!!!  We do not want to become complacent, resting or making do.  We love the challenge of surprising people and never want to become boring in our design ethos.

Emerging designer Anna Lukindo’s Vibrant designs to grace the LGN Events Summer Catwalk

Tanzanian born Fashion Designer, Anna Lukindo, will showcase her latest collection from her fashion label Anna Luks on 8 July at the LGN Events Summer Catwalk Presentation in London.

Anna Lukindo, launched her label Anna Luks in 2010 due to her immense interest in fashion and textiles and made her London Fashion Week debut in February 2011.

Having originally worked in her home country of Tanzania as an architectural draughts woman she kept alive her passion and talent of using textiles and creating her own designs. Moving to London, she decided to pursue her passion of working in clothing design which later led on to her graduating from Middlesex University in B.A. Fashion in 2010.

‘Anna Luks’ designs and signature work can be seen and recognised in the use of yarns, ropes, cords, zips, organic fabrics and architectural influences.

Anna says that creating with textiles has always been a passion for as long as she can remember. This allows her to experiment in terms of printing and dying to create unique designs. With the yarns, she creates cords for her fabrics to produce a variety of textures. Using at times a laissez-faire approach to her work as it allows freedom of her imagination to ultimately produce the Anna Luks master-piece.

5 Mins with designer Gloria Wavamunno...

We caught up with Ugandan designer Gloria Wavamunno who will be showcasing her stunning african inspired creations at the LGN Events’ off-schedule London Fashion Week show “A La Mode” in February 2011...Read on to find out more about her new collection ...

Above pic: Gloria wearing one of her designs

1. Your African background seems to be one of your main inspirations when producing your collections, so to be showcasing at African Fashion Week in 2009 must have been an incredible honour. How was the whole experience?

Yes it is because it is a part of who i am, its feels natural. Showcasing at Africa Fashion Week 2009 was amazing, being a new fresh designer, that had only been in business for the past 6 months, for them to give me that oppurtunity and that exposure was just really humbeling and encouraging. They really took care of my work and allowed me to express it.

2. What is your ultimate goal as a designer?

My goal is to dress all kinds of women from all walks of life and race and culture. My clothes are for that individual woman, who is just that individual. I want the spirit of my designs to touch them.

3. What can we expect to see from Gloria Wavamunno in Feb's LFW show, 'A La Mode?'

Unique, evoking, fresh but respecting history clothing that is light but heavy.

4. Who would be your ideal celebrity to endorse your brand?

I love women that are just really free with themselves in their style, so Rihanna, Amber Rose, to Blake Lively.

5. Are you excited about coming to London and what do you think of London Fashion Week as a whole?

I am excited, think i will still be in shock/excitment till im watching my clothes go down the runway. I think London Fashion Week is just one of the Fashion Weeks I really adore for their belief in new designers and people in Artistry. It just has that vibe for anything goes and is appreciated. I love that!

A Quick interview with My Fair Lingerie designer Rae-Emily Smith...

My Fair Lingerie recently showcased at our Movida Summer Soiree Catwalk show showcasing their gorgeous bespoke intimate pieces. We caught up with the designer behind the brand, Rae-Emily Smith to learn more about her new label.

Why did you decide to specialise in lingerie?

I always knew i wanted to do something fashion related but lingerie has always been something I was drawn to. I have a bit of a lingerie addiction and have been banned on quite a few occasions from buying anymore by my friends and family. Whilst deciding on Universities to apply to I got a leaflet in the post by chance which mentioned the contour fashion course at De Montfort University - The only degree course in the world to specialise in lingerie, underwear, bodywear and swimwear. I completed a foundation year in art and design at DMU and was accepted onto the contour course.

What makes your pieces unique?

All of the garments are hand made to order by myself. My pieces tend to be a bit quirky and i try to offer customers something a bit different to what is already available. I think that there is definately a gap in the market for pretty, feminine nightwear and lingerie which i wanted to fill.
If you could pick any celebrity in the world to model your pieces who would it be?

Probably someone like Emma Watson as she is an intelligent, beautiful, woman and a good role model. Also Katy Perry as she has a quirky style and fun loving attitude.

What has been some of your career highlights?

My Fair Lady was only founded last year so it is still quite early days but showcasing my new collection at movida was a great experience and one that i learnt a lot from, It was also the first catwalk that i have done so will always be something that stands out to me. The last few months have been very busy and i have had a lot of interest in the brand. Over the next couple of months i have a lot of shoots and exciting projects to work on.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

In 5 years time i would like to see My Fair Lady Lingerie stocked in boutiques. I would also like to introduce a diffusion line which i could have manufactured in a factory so that i could offer more affordable pieces to appeal to a wider market as well as selling the hand made collection.

When you're not designing you're. ..

Catching up with friends and family. I have a thing for old second hand books at the moment and like to read when i get the time. As i am still at University a lot of time is spent on my uni work during term time although i have a lot more free time to relax now that it is the summer break.

5 mins with designer Victoria Rangayah of new label Z-Mode…

1. What inspired you to enter the fashion world?
My mother's old clothes was my first point of inspiration to become a fashion designer. After cutting up few of her dresses and later on few of my husband's shirts I have decided that It’s time to study fashion.

2. What inspires your designs and how do you acquire your creative edge?
I absolutely love men's suiting fabrics, I get so excited walking in the menswear section in department stores and try to imagine how these fabrics would work in my designs. I love mixing different textures and shapes, and very often for my inspiration I turn back to Africa. This culture rich continent is perfect ‘food’ for my creative mind!

3. Has your experience in the fashion industry matched your perception of the fashion world?
I am still a newcomer to the fashion industry and I believe I still have a lot to learn, but I must say I didn't expect it to be easy so I’m ready for a challenge!

4. You have a wealth of fashion experiences behind you and from these experiences what advice would you give to other rising fashion designers?
The only advice I could ever give to anyone is - be proactive! If you want to achieve something - go and get it! Don’t be scared to be rejected, there is a door for you that's waiting to be opened - just keep knocking!

5. What makes your designs different yet appealing to your target market/buyer?Who is the z-mode customer?
My designs are edgy but yet not over designed and quite commercial. The sharp lines mixed with flowing silhouettes, hint of tailoring, these are the z-mode style staples.
z-mode clothes are targeted to over 25 years old customers, however we do have styles that can be suitable to younger girls too. Strong minded, confident, sophisticated - those are the characteristics of z-mode customer.

6. If you had just one word to describe fashion what would it be?
Art

5 Mins with Emerging Designer Leeanne Garrett...

We Quickly caught up with emerging designer Leeanne Garrett who recently showcased at Brighton Fashion Week and our Movida Summer Soiree Catwalk Show...Read on

What inspired you to want to pursue a career in the fashion industry?

I studied Textiles at school and have always been very creative and enjoyed customising clothes, shoes, bags and even light bulbs anything that I could paint I would. I have always enjoyed sketching clothing and designs and have a strong idea in my own mind of what I like so that is what has inspired me to make garments that I would like to see and wear. And the achievement of seeing a design go from being just an idea to reality is a real sense of achievement and great satisfaction.

What is your main source of inspiration when designing?

Anything deep and meaningful to myself. My last collection was very deep emotionally and was taken from childhood memories to adulthood and the emotional struggles throughout my life. I like to look within myself for inspiration and make a collection that is meaningful to me. For me I use the collection to express myself such as an artist would through their work. My collections are emotional expressions of art to me.

Tell us a bit about your current collection?

My current collection FAIRYTALE EMOTIONS, is a collection based on emotional struggles and repressing emotions and creating emotional barriers of protection around the inner self. I was inspired by my love of Disney classics such as Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. As a child I would repeatedly watch Disney fairy-tales and I had a very vivid imagination and daydreamed that life would evolve as the fairy-tales did. As in life real life is far from a fairytale and over the years I have sought comfort and guidance from Tarot cards that also greatly inspired and influenced me when designing this collection. The collection is built up of panels and barriers with a softer side throughout the collection. The panels and high collars are repressing emotions and throughout the collection the emotional barriers are being broken down using soft hand sewn fabric manipulation reflecting the vulnerable emotional feelings under the protective barriers.

How was the response like to your collection in London after the Movida showcase?

I have had a great response since the Movida show and with several contacts that have requested to work with me on projects. Movida was an amazing venue and has greatly helped to promote my collection to press and buyers. I was really pleased with the response that I received after the Movida show.

You recently showcased at Brighton Fashion Week. Tell us a bit more about that experience?

Brighton fashion week was an amazing experience. It was my second show since my graduation show a few weeks previously so I was very nervous and did not know what to expect. The show was a great success and gave me the chance to really show off my collection and to network with models and industry contacts. I thoroughly enjoyed Brighton fashion week and I will definitely be showing there again next year.

What would you consider to be the most difficult aspect of running your own label versus i.e. design, production, sales, finance, advertising?

I think the most difficult aspect is production and finance. I have just left uni and I am new to the industry so I am still finding my feet so to speak. I have had a lot of interest in my collection but to reproduce the collection on a larger scale I need to put my collection into a factory to be reproduced. I am currently enrolled on several business courses to help me with the launching of my own label.

Which other fashion designers do you admire?

I love Viktor and Rolf I just think their collections are AMAZING, they are are just unique and inspiring and just create the most crazy collections that still manage to be wearable and beautiful as well as being just crazy. I also really love J.C Castlebajac his pop art designs really cheer me up and I think his collections are really fun and playful. John Galliano and the late Alexander McQueen also greatly inspire me. I love anything daring and different to the norm. All of these designers show clear expression and passion within their collections.

What do you hope to have achieved in the industry, 5 years from now?

To have my own successful label and to be showing my collections at LONDON, MILAN AND PARIS Fashion Week. You can only but try and I intend to work hard and try my best to succeed in this industry. It's going to be hard work but I am determined and strong willed so I will keep going until I achieve my dreams and goals.
