Introducing Zerrin Akinci.....

As preparation for LFW continues, we are meeting up with all the designers set to showcase at the ' A La Mode show. This week we caught up with Cyprus based designer Zerrin Akinci. She gave us a little insight into her brand and where she gets inspiration from.
Your  passion is to create the unique, what does unique mean to you?
As a designer, I design with the passion to create as unique as the soul, as fitted as the skin and as unique as my clients. I believe each of us has different fingerprints that are born and live with us till we die.  Like  the  fingerprints we have,  we are all solitary both insight and out-sight , we are solitary in characters and in styles.  We have no likes-no equals.  With these beliefs, ZA by Zerrin Akinci offers its innovative and reflective designs for the believers of what you wear reflects your iner-ness.

Cyprus is a small place where did your big dreams come from?
Cyprus is a small island which is divided into two parts as North and South Cyprus, and where there is almost nothing about fashion sector.   However I belive that dreams are something that come from inside to outside, not from outside to inside. It is something that’s in your karma, and it’s your dharma.. Nevermind where you were born, you came to this world with a dharma-  aim of life. When you find what it is, each day you wake up with a different energy with the happiness of taking steps towards your dharma.  Sketching has always been a passion for me as long as i remember. At 16, I became second in an international design competiton, just missing out a placement in New York fashion school. After completion of my BA in PR and MA in marketing communications, and 3 years of experience in trade marketing, I quit everything and headed to USA to follow my childhood dream.  Living in a small island has both advantages and disadvantages for me.  Nevertheless, Living in Cyprus  absolutely increases my motives to network and work harder and harder to reach my goals.
You often use loud and vibrant colours in your designs, is the woman you imagine wearing your designs loud and vibrant in her personality?
ZA woman is a  fashiontrendsetter rather than a follower. She is modern, elegant and vibrant.  ‘What I wear reflect my own inner-ness’ is her fashion moto. She is aware the fact that image is important in today’s world but more than that she believes in style personality.

If you can have any celebrity endorse your brand who would you pick and why?
Definetely I would like to work with Alek Wek. Apart from the fact that she was my inspiration when i was sketching on my desk in highschool years, I find her story of immigration from Sudan during the Civil war and  that she was discovered by a model agency while shopping in London Market very inspiring.  Her re-definition of  the standards of beauty in fashion  is very similar to my fashion attitude about inner beauty. Her ethnic background, and her standing on the stage in style and  as black and  beautiful as she can, goes relatively with my designs. Also her social responsibility as a human being in helping to raise awareness about Sudan, about AIDS, as well as the plight of refugees worldwide,  makes me admire her more . Simply, as she is the message I  am trying to give about fashion, she is the one I would like to endorse my brand.

What are your current inspirations for your future collections
For my future collection I am inspired by envelopes. And the meaning of this white piece of paper for the people.  Theme of my collection is ‘an envelope…all I am waiting for…’  During at some phases of our lives,  we are all waiting for an envelope. We might be waiting for a love letter from a lover, or just a hello from a family member abroad. It might be an acceptance letter from the university… an envelope… Sometimes It is all we are looking for..to have a new beginning..or  an end..

How does it feel to be coming to showcase to your collection during LFW?
AMAZING JI am ver very excited about this show

Where did the Eastern and Mediterranean influences come from?
I am a mediterranean who believes in the protection of evil eyes,  dreamcatchers etc. I like to read and learn about spirituality,  different cultures and beliefs.

You evidently have many eastern inspirations, you studied in America, did that influence  your designs in any way?
I simply describe myself as an international  designer educated in the West who looks to the East  for the inspiration.

Introducing Alja Slemensek

We recently caught up with Slovenian fashion designer Alja Slemensek to find out more about her fashion label, what inspires her and her plans for the label. Alja will be showcasing her S/S12 collection in September during London Fashion Week.

Did you always want to be a fashion designer? If you were not a fashion designer what would you have been?
Yes, being fashion designer was always my dream since I was a child. I think a makeup artist or photographer.
How do you think growing up in Slovenia influenced your designs?
There are always positive and negative sides I think and growing up here is not a fashion designers dream ;). I wish I would know how I would turn out as a designer if I would grow up in London, Paris or New York, but I definitely believe I would be different also as a person or not?. I think there are quite a few very good designers here but it is really hard to only work and create in Slovenia and live from it... I am thinking about going abroad again.

What did your university exchange program in Denmark teach you about design?
I was accepted at Designskolen in Denmark for one year-exchange-programme. They put me in a class with older students who were already working on their Master's. That one year gave me so much. I became more confident and self-reliant designer. I also got better in technical skills. I did a few workshops, learnt how to knit. There were always consultations available if you needed help with something. It was a great experience for me in every way.
What would you describe your aesthetic to be?
I like lace, vintage styles and details. I like minimalism and less is more but sometimes I like kitsch. The label's concept is sensual minimalism, colour-themed, detailed. Designs are based on the cut of the fabric, organic lines and forms, contrast.

Where do you get your inspiration? How does it come to you?
Oh this is so hard to answer. I guess it comes from life, from how you feel that moment, everything I like can inspire me, also my friends and people I meet, dreams, films...Its in me. I don’t know how to explain that ;).
What ideas and themes influenced your current collection?
This last collection was inspired by origami technique and modern warrior (Origami Warrior) but right now this new collection that I am working on is inspired by LOVE, Romance,..
What would you say the "Alja Slemensek" woman is like?
Elegant, loves and appreciate Art, nature and animals. Confident, yet shy. Happy and positive, respectful.

To what extent did the work experience at KAUFMANFRANCO influence your work?
It was great. I got a look-in how a fashion company works; got to work in a team and meet nice talented people. I learnt a lot on different fields too and decided I have to start my own label.
What was it like to participate in the Ramazzoti runaway award for Berlin Fashion week?
It was a nice experience. The event was well-organized by professionals so I only focused on my collection. I got nice compliments in the end and also some other opportunities.
What other fashion shows have you taken part in?
Had several fashion shows in Slovenia, one in Denmark and this April I had fashion show at Macedonia Fashion week.

How has your styling experience influenced your designs?
I like to try everything connected with cloths, fashion and so on.  To get more and different experience.
So I am happy that I did some styling for magazines and helped with costumes at music video, TV commercials and short film... I met some really talented and interesting people but I also realized that I love to design and I am more focused on that.
What are your hopes for the label in the future?
I wish my label would be favoured with more new happy costumers. To get even better and well-known and keep doing what I love to do. I guess that is every designers dream :)

5 Mins with LA Designer Alana Hale...

We caught up with edgy LA-based designer Alana Hale who will be taking to the stage at LGN Events’ off-schedule London Fashion Week show “A La Mode” in February 2011...Read on to find out more

Where do you get most of your inspiration?

Being a creative person I am constantly inspired. It would be a lie for me to give you an easy, straightforward answer on this. What has most inspired me up to this point is old Hollywood icons, renaissance art, wardrobes of European royalty throughout history and old world architecture. That’s just naming a few- the list grows everyday. My inspiration is constantly evolving and that’s what keeps the looks fresh.

What prompted you to start your own fashion label?

I’ve wanted to have my own fashion label since elementary school when I learned what it was. I would play dress up, put together outfits, and noticed every little detail of the other outfits around me. And when one of my mom’s friends, who was an amazing seamstress, offered to make me whatever I wanted to play dress up in, well that was the birth of my life of design. I designed fur and sequin cocktail dresses, tulle ball gowns and wild hats- not knowing I’d one day rework those very outfits for a runway show.

After design school I worked as an assistant designer for about a year and a half and when I felt I had learned all I needed to, I branched out on my own. I certainly hadn’t learned as much as I thought I had but I wouldn’t change a thing. Having my own fashion label is all that makes sense… I can’t see myself doing any different.

Describe the woman you are designing for? (What does she do? Where does she live? Etc)

The Alana Hale woman is fun, vivacious, sensual, fashion-forward, and confident in a way she doesn’t dress for anyone else but herself. These clothes are for innovators and most certainly no girl who wants to blend into the crowd.

Which celebrity would you love to see wearing your designs?

Blake Lively would be the perfect poster-child for Alana Hale. She is the Alana Hale woman: She’s America’s fashion-forward sweetheart with such magnetism that everything she puts on turns to gold. I think Carey Mulligan and Alexa Chung have incredible style and would love to dress them.

And among the “Dream Team” would be Sarah Jessica Parker, Lady Gaga, Anna Dello Russo, and Daphne Guinness. They are on my all-time-best-dressed list because every outfit is impeccable and you can really tell they love fashion.

What has been the high point of your fashion career so far?

The highlights of my career so far have been when Paula Abdul wore a look from my Holiday Collection on the season finale of American Idol and when Rachel Zoe reportedly said she “loved my collection.” The American Idol finale was immeasurable exposure and for a brand-new designer a huge honour. Rachel Zoe is a huge force in the industry; she has such influence and style. I hold her opinion in the highest regard.

Where do you see your designs in 5 years’ time?

What I see evolving within the next 5 years is the connection with my customer, to establish a bond and loyalty. I want my customers to know me and for me to know my customers. In 5 years time I also see the label’s recognition going up significantly, and to eventually be a household name. And lastly, I see the line going global. Within the next 5 years I want my collection to be available to the Alana Hale woman of the US, UK, France, Italy, Japan and Hong Kong.

What advice would you give to other aspiring independent designers?

No matter what critics say, stay true to who you are as a designer. An idea that has earned you criticism, can one day be the very thing you become famous for. I am a very strong believer in staying true to my vision. Conforming is the kiss of death.

Luxury Accessory designer Rana Al Soliman brings a touch of the Middle East to Jalouse during LFW

If you swear by the saying ‘a girl can never have too many bags’ then consider Rana Al Soliman a god send. The exceptional handbag designer will be casting an Arabian spell during London Fashion Week where she will be showcasing her ‘Rajadano Agate’ bag collection at the Jalouse London Fashion Week Closing show.

Hailing from majestic Saudi Arabia, this artist and designer has an extensively interesting history in experimenting with various creative mediums. Majoring in graphic design from the American College in London, (The American University), Rana attended various courses and workshops in the US and Europe to further perfect her creative skills. Amongst her array of creative expertise, Rana counts painting, graphic design, Islamic drawing, Venetian glass blowing and flower arranging as favoured indulgences; incorporating the design influence she acquired from these art forms into her leather bag designs.

Rajadano aspires to capture the essence of cultural nostalgia and ethnic beauty and make this accessible to the everyday fashionista. With a select range of 107 serial numbered bags produced in each collection, Rajadano is not only an example of striking design mastery, but indeed a stark symbol of exclusivity. Inspiration for the ‘Rajadano Agate’ collection surfaced from grouping the tradition, mysticism and ethnic heritage of Saudi Arabia resulting in intricately detailed designs using traditional materials and beading to produce a genuinely unique pattern, with adornments of handcrafted leather embroidery and Agate semi-precious stones.

The ‘Rajadano Agate’ collection comprises of four different styles. An assortment from evening clutches to everyday shoulder bags, and in keeping with the Agate inspiration, the collection combines metallic leather with earthy tones and comes in three shades of brown, metallic colours of gold, silver and bronze alongside the classic black and white leather pieces. Embroidered with various Islamic patterns in silver and gold coloured thread, festooned with an array of differently coloured Agate stone, each Rajadano creation depicts an inimitable facet of style personality; a perfect embodiment of cultural enchantment.

Rana Al Soliman will be showcasing her outstanding ‘Agate Collection’ at the Jalouse Fashion Rocks LFW closing show which will celebrate another spectacular season of LFW and is being held at upmarket celebrity hotspot Jalouse on 22nd September 2010.

Catching up with designer Kate Williams...

She will be showcasing her wearable yet forward thinking designs during London Fashion Week this coming season and was a finalist at the Australian Fashion Design Awards. A name to watch out for, we quickly caught up with designer Kate Williams to learn more about her label...
Tell us about your design philosophy.

I aim to design clothes with women, their bodies and their lifestyle needs in mind. It is extremely important to me that the clothing I design is eminently wearable and comfortable as well as forward-thinking and stylish. Achieving the balance between style, comfort and lifestyle needs is a challenging one, but one that I feel is crucially important to the modern, active and intelligent woman, and I feel privileged to be able to take up that challenge!

What inspired you to pursue a career in the fashion industry?

I was studying law at university when I realised that I wanted to do something much more creative with my career. I undertook an internship with the amazing girls, Margaret and Michelle, at MXM Couture in Brisbane to see if fashion design could be the right avenue for me. My time with them was so inspiring and motivating. They instilled me with such a passion for design and the craftsmanship of clothing, that I left Law and embarked upon my new direction!

You were a finalist in the Australian Fashion Design Awards in 2006, how did it feel for your talent to be recognised?

The Australian Fashion Design Awards was a great experience and I felt incredibly excited and honoured to have my work shown on a national platform. The most valuable outcome of the Awards was the tremendous feedback I received from the public. It was great to be acknowledged by my peers, but receiving such a widespread, positive response from fashion consumers really gave me the validation that I was on the right track.

The following year you were offered a position in the Golden Key International Honour Society, how did this have an impact on you?

This was the unexpected result of a lot of hard work and I was so pleased to be recognised in this way!

Who would you choose to be your ideal muse?

I find it quite limiting to choose a particular person as a muse. I know from my own experience that women play so many different roles throughout their lives and, indeed, throughout a single day (!) that working from a single muse would not be enough for me to develop a well-rounded collection. Many individual women inspire me every day and I use aspects of all these different women in each collection.

In terms of your design philosophy, do you relate to any other fashion designers?

I suppose I relate largely to the approach that designers such as Donna Karan and Issa take towards design. The woman who wears the clothes must be paramount when developing each new collection. The clothes must both feel comfortable and look fabulous!

Tell us about the inspiration for your current collection.

The inspirations behind my new collection are multifarious. The differences and similarities between individual human bodies was a key influence which was coupled with a further exploration of the concept of 'the other'. The common structural elements of our bodies are explored through cut and print and juxtaposed with slightly off-kilter colour play. This results in a compelling collection within which visual elegance is coupled with a more visceral response.

LFW Is Set To Play Host To The Exquisite New SS11 Collection By Parisian Label Malam

Designer Emmanuelle-Marie, a graduate from ESMOD Paris, who holds a love of fun aesthetics, prints and vintage textiles, will unveil her latest S/S11 collection as part of the off-schedule London Fashion Week show ‘A La Mode.’

Emmanuelle-Marie first created the Malam label in 2007 and since then the label has been going from strength to strength as she navigates her way through the fashion world. Her original premise was to breathe life into the world of mainstream fashion through offering different and unique, but still wearable, designs and prints.

A versatile designer, Emmanuelle-Marie likes to experiment, using all kinds of fabrics to create her designs, but with a preference for vintage finds. She incorporates a range of prints and often plays with fun and flirty shapes, in both ready-to-wear and made to measure garments, some being limited edition, alongside an extensive accessories range. Catering for males and females; dresses, skirts, coats and jackets are all lovingly handmade in her studio in east of Paris, where her ideas are both conceived and created.

Her pieces combine a clear love of high-fashion and interesting, intricate prints with styles that women can really wear in their day-to-day lives, encompassing floaty dresses with details such as bows and oversized sleeves. With a desire to break from the ordinary and give something new, Emmanuelle-Marie often styles her romantic pieces with heavy biker boots, mixing fun prints with heavy make-up and gothic settings, in keeping with the feminine meets androgyny trend of the summer.

The Malam SS11 collection is sure to continue with Emmanuelle-Marie’s desire to mix up the fashion world. Eagerly awaited her show will be part of the ‘A La Mode’ International showcase and will take place on Saturday 18 September from 7.30pm.

Press and buyer’s wishing to attend the show should email Terri at Theresa@lagenevenorth.co.uk
