Style of week

Strong mixes of colors fusing a perfect rebel look for an intruding end of season style.  We are not huge fans of autumn but we love dark colors and shades which compliment skin tones, we find this look perfect as the contradictive blend of colors works well as a whole look. Dense colors with a touch of print on the trousers and boots compliments the season.

Introducing Obscure Couture...

By now most of you are all aware that aside from our 'A La Mode' Show, this fashion week we also have our 'Emerging Designers Catwalk Presentation' in association with Browns Courtrooms. This week we caught up with the ladies behind fashion label Obscure Couture who will be showcasing at the show on September 19th.

Tell us a bit about your brand?
We are Obscure Couture, we create street/stage wear for the introverted extrovert. All of our limited edition, individually numbered collections are handmade with love in the UK.  Here at Obscure Heights we use only the finest materials we can get our little mitts on, from the most pampered Kobe leathers to the most delicate French lace and back ground to amazing hand knits.  Make your other clothes jealous!

How did you come up with the name?
My partner Lyndsay started Obscure Couture while I was working in Sydney, she originally came up with a name that was a bit naughty then decided to change to Obscure Couture.  I love it! Not so much fun to say when you have had a glass of wine...
What clients do you aim to target?
Our pieces are aimed at the introverted extrovert.  That person who likes to be an individual, stand out, loud, from the crowd.  It's not for wallflowers.  We say, Get Obscure Couture on and feel fearless, desirable and in demand.  A lot of our pieces are very stage orientated and really showcase the person wearing them.

Why the twist of punk in your traditional Victorian designs?
The Victoriana punk was our inspiration for AW11/12.  The two just go so well together, we wanted to harness punks stark harshness and create a brash clash of sex and beauty.  The Victorian silhouette is lots of fun to play with and the complete over indulgence from both influences really gave us a brilliant base from which to show off!!

Where do Obscure Couture’s inspirations come from?
We are inspired by EVERYTHING, it's hard for us to focus and keep in our 'seasonal' bubble as we tend to run off with ideas and have the next three seasons on the back burner.  We do tend to go for things that are generally stereotyped or labelled and try to bring them a fresh breath.  Inspiration from the most unimaginable beauty and the darkest depths, emotion evoking extremes!!

You say that you don’t follow trend books, what trends would you like to set?
We are big advocates for dressing how you feel, really expressing yourself or expressing your values and opinions through style and choice of garment.  It does happen, everyone does it but mainly just 'oh I feel drained today, I think I'll pull this massive black sheet on".  I guess the 'trend' we would like to set is for people to be more expressive and give the option of choice.

What is your bestselling piece?
We have had such a great reception so far, it's been overwhelming.  Can I give you our top three??  Our big pieces have been the mandible skirt (high waisted ombre silk chiffon with gorgeous full length ruffles and tiered train), our Trapezium top (studded kobe leather and hand painted silk trapeze top) and Malleus skirt which is pink lamb nappa with oversized pockets lined with kobe leather and hand stud details.

What factors do you consider when creating your designs?
We initially think of our inspiration, the season, fabrics.  The most exciting part for us is the photo shoot, we like to tell stories through them so we think of our stories, how we imagine people wearing the pieces and the over all message we want to get out.
This season is SS12 and we have made realistic adaptations to the normal Spring/Summer ideas, lets face it, we are not getting the weather to justify ALL these tiny summer outfits!!!

Which celebrity do you think would make a great ambassador for Obscure Couture?
We love Fever Ray, YoLandi Vi$$a, Chloe Sevigny, Georgia May Jagger and Pixie Geldof.  For starters haha! All these girls have immense style and exude confidence.

What have been some of your career highlights to date?
We launched Obscure Couture in October 2010 so we are a relatively new business.  We were nominated for Young Designer of the Year at the Scottish Fashion Awards 2011.  That was huge considering we had created just one collection; we were up against people who have been in the business for years.  It’s brilliant to get the recognition so early.  Then, of course showing our debut collection 'Flesh and Bone' at London fashion week in February 2011.

What should we expect from Obscure designs in the coming future?
Expect the unexpected!!!  We do not want to become complacent, resting or making do.  We love the challenge of surprising people and never want to become boring in our design ethos.

5mins with Cosmetics company J'ouvert

As London Fashion Week draws nearer we want to let you know about everything we have planned and working with new cosmetics brand J'ouvert is one of them. The brand which welcomes you to be the artist of your own face will be providing some great products for our goody bags. We caught up with them for a quick chat to find out more about the brand, where they get inspiration from and what their best selling product is....Keep reading to find out more.

Tell us a bit about J'ouvert cosmetics?
To respond to our client's requests, we (Meridith Hypolite, a fashion and colour analysis advisor, and Ana Blaauw-Torres, Creative Director of J’ouvert) developed a unique tool for helping women create a total make-up look in a few easy steps; we assembled various products into colour mood collections, called the palettes. Soon we realized that to attain the subtlety, choice and quality we envisioned, we would have to start our own line. Finally, J'ouvert was born. J'ouvert (pronounced Jouvay in the warm French of the Caribbean) means I open the break of dawn’. It’s a time to explore, create and express your own individual style, be it through clothes or make-up.We conducted several years of hands-on research and testing, and have dedicated ourselves to developing simple, clear, coordinated make-up
both for women who have little knowledge of applying make-up and to the more experienced make-up users.

Where is it currently available?
J'ouvert is currently avilable only online at www.jouvertcosmetics.com. However, we are hoping to change this in the near future so that our clients will have more access to our products.

What new products are you currently working on?
We are working on a new palette theme which will have something for everyone.

What should the audience of the 'A La Mode' expect from your products?
High-performance,  quality products with long lasting results.

Where does the inspiration of carnival time come from?
J'ouvert is about freedom of expression just like during the time of carnival. We wanted that freedom to continue through the line so that women can be creative at all times.

What do you feel about the development of the cosmetics industry?
There is still a lot of progress to be made but the industry is starting to understand that make-up is not just about colours and new products but about equipping women with the tools to become the artist of their own face.
What do J'ouvert Cosmetics offer their clients?
Choice and quality, clear, coordinated make-up for all kinds of women. Tools for helping women to create a total make-up look in few easy steps. Some other services we offer our clients are colour/style analysis and wedding advice.

What is your best selling product right now?
Our top sellers are our amazing "Mooi" Luminizer, Drama Lash mascara,
Lapeau Kabwit Palette (Natural desert colours in a tan to gold range), Cream Blush (Deep Impact), and our Quickie Set ( Lipgloss, blush and
Mascara).

What are the current cosmetic trends?
One of the current trends on the market right now is colour-blocking. It is a perfect way to become the artist of your own face and just have fun
with colours.

What colour palettes would you like to see in trend?
More bold colours to encourage women to slowly think outside the box.

What three products must a client have?
Must haves for every lady's hand bag are lip gloss, mascara and blush. This is what we call the "quickie", as these three products can enhance the face in a matter of minutes.

What significant things did you learn about cosmetics whilst you were
testing to creating the perfect products?
We learned and we truly believe that make-up should not appear to change the face beyond recognition but rather enhance its best features. That’s why all the background work has been done, so women can easily create their own look with little help from the experts. The perfect product for us is one that gives the opportunity to create a full range of expressions, from the most subtle effect to carnival wild.

Next Big Thing: Tea Dresses

It’s always exciting thinking of your next season’s must-have wardrobe staple and I’ve decided that mine will be a printed tea dress, as seen on many catwalks; including  the likes of Jonathan Saunders.  It has been all the rage this season, but the beauty about this dress is that it won’t just be a one-season wonder.  You can still rock it next season as the Autumn/Winter collections will be full of elegant and graceful forties’ silhouettes, and yes, the printed tea dress will be featured again.

Another beauty about this dress is that it can be worn to most occasions.  Choose the right one and it can take you from lunches to parties; from shopping to nights out. It can be worn solo if the weather is warm with heels or gladiator sandals, or worn under a belted cardigan with tights once it starts to get chilly.  It’s such a versatile dress that you will get a lot of wear out of it and it will always look effortlessly chic.

There are lots of lovely prints to choose from and whatever your budget there will be something to suit you.  The high street has a great variety if you’re looking for a bargain; but many designers have also featured this trend if you want to spend a bit more.  Either way, this dress is an essential item for any girl’s wardrobe and is great for those of us that relish clothes that are always in vogue.
